Travel deep into the million-year-old Amazon rainforest on this Expedition, uncovering its secrets through the eyes of local guides. Join a naturalist on a night walk through the forest, keeping your ears open for the symphony of hooting owls, croaking frogs, and chirping insects. Watch for monkeys and birdlife while navigating the Sandoval Lake, and be amazed by the colorful spectacle of parrots and macaws at the world´s largest Clay-lick, Chuncho.
Fly or drive to Puerto Maldonado this morning and continue by motorized canoe to our comfortable lodge, situated within the Tambopata National Reserve in the Amazon rainforest. Spot local bird species along the lush shores of the Madre de Dios River en route to the lodge, and set off on an evening walk with a naturalist guide before dinner, keeping an eye out for some of the rainforest’s nocturnal creatures.
Spend the day exploring the thriving ecosystems of the rainforest with your naturalist guides. Scan the treetops for toucans, howler monkeys, and sloths, and glide along oxbow lakes on canoes for a chance to glimpse river otters, turtles, and, if we’re lucky, anacondas. Later, learn about the flora and fauna of the tropical forest, while you hike through the lush vegetation. Embark on a lake tour by canoe on the lookout for caimans, the smaller cousins of alligators, which are often found hiding near the muddy banks.
Today we travel back to Puerto Maldonado and continue toward the other extraordinary place, the Macaw´s Clay Lick. Explore Sandoval Lake in the morning before your breakfast, searching for caimans, birds, monkeys and much more. Drive from Puerto Maldonado through the amazing rainforest and navigate the Tambopata River to your lodge, strategically located within the Reserve. This evening, follow your Naturalist into the forest to seek out the fascinating nocturnal creatures that spring to life after the sun goes down, from red-eyed tree frogs to spiny porcupines.
Rise and shine! early today for our main activity in the Peru´s southern Rainforest, the Chuncho Clay-lick. Spot local bird species along the lush shores of the Tambopata River en route to the hotspot, including some mammals, such us capybaras, tapir, and with luck, the Jaguar might stalk slowly off an open beach into the forest, flicking its tail in annoyance at our intrusion. Spend and admire the entire morning at this colorful place, later, return to the lodge for our well-deserved lunch. Explore the forest in the afternoon searching for more wildlife while you learn about the native flora.
Today, get a monkey’s-eye view of the rain forest on a guided walk from the 40 meters high tower. Get close-up views of the unique ecosystem of the rainforest canopy while you spot toucans, bright hummingbirds, and many other species in the leafy forest.
Travel out of the rainforest by boat and catch a flight from Puerto Maldonado to Lima. After breakfast, we head back to Puerto Maldonado as your Amazon experience comes to an end. Upon arrival, and connect with your flight home or consider extending your holiday.
