Glorious Ausangate Expedition 5D / 4N

Description

Ausangate is one of the most spiritual routes, due to the presence of the Vilcanota mountain range where the highest peak in Cusco stands up, the Ausangate (6,384 masl – 20,944 ft.), the protector god in the Peruvian Andes. During the tour there is the presence of llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, complementing the presence of human groups. Itinerary

Day 1.- Cusco – Upis

Early in the morning, we will leave the City of Cusco to Tinki village (3700 masl – 12139 ft.) heading the route of the south valley. We drive through several small towns where we are going to visit chapels and lakes, arriving at the village after three hours approximately. After our delicious lunch we will start trekking along the mountainous terrain, dry climate and with a unique vegetation (Puna ecological floor) for about two hours until the lunch spot. After that, we keep hiking for another two more hours until Upis (4430 masl – 14534 ft.), our first camp site.

Day 2.- Upis – Ausangatecocha

After our breakfast we will continue the expedition ascending by approximately 4 hours to reach Arapa pass (4850 masl – 15912 ft.) and then, we descend until the lunch place. Exploring the area, we will see the unique flora and fauna, walking by three colorful and beautiful lakes, Yanacocha, Hatun Pucacocha and Q´omercocha. After lunch we will continue for about two hours along the route surrounded by snow-capped peaks, and get the second pass, the Apuchata pass (4900 masl – 16076 ft.), after reaching the summit, we will descend to Ausangatecocha Lake, our next campsite (4440 masl – 14566 ft.).

Day 3. Ausangatecocha – Q´ampa

Today we start earlier to get the third pass which is the highest in the whole expedition. After two hours, we get the Palomani pass (5200 masl – 17060 ft.), then we will descend another 2 hours, enjoying the local fauna such us llamas, alpacas and vizcachas until Pampa cancha (4050 masl – 13287 ft.) where we have lunch. In the afternoon after lunch, we keep going up to our next camp site, Q´ampa (4300 masl – 14107 ft.) taking us approximately three hours.

Day 4.- Q´ampa – Pacchanta

After breakfast we will hike for about two hours until the Q’ampa pass (5000 masl – 16404 ft.), then we descend for approximately five hours to Pacchanta village (4100 masl – 13451 ft.). We have lunch and free afternoon for being in the hots spring relaxing ourselves.

Day 5.- Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco

In the morning we will leave Pacchanta and start the hike to Tinki village which will take us about two hours, once in Tinki, we take our van and drive back to Cusco, arriving in the afternoon.

Recommendations

  •  Acclimatization is necessary in Cusco, two days before starting the tour. For a good acclimatization it is necessary to rest as much as possible, eat little, drink plenty of liquid; especially the mate de coca that has medicinal properties. Adequate acclimatization prevents affecting the “soroche” or altitude sickness, which could cause numerous health problems.
  •   Take a -10° Celsius sleeping bag for the expedition
  • Do not drink alcoholic drinks before the expedition
